Pioneer football team gets defensive, but still drops 13-3 decision at Illinois College

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Grinnell College's football team put up a superb defensive performance Saturday afternoon, but despite that the Pioneers lost a hard-fought 13-3 decision at Illinois College.

The Blueboys' point total of 13 is the lowest for the program against Grinnell since 2003, when they nipped the Pioneers 10-0.

Illinois College went ahead 7-0 midway through the first period, but the Pioneers got on the board at the 10:49 mark of the second frame when Ryan Feldman '29 booted a 29-yard field goal. The Blueboys got an insurance TD in the third period.

Defending MWC Defensive Performer of the Week Luke Konczal '29 had 13 solo tackles and 16 overall for the Pioneers, who are 3-3 and 2-2 in the conference. CJ Readon '27 and Adam Whalen '28 had seven stops apiece, with Whalen also posting 2.5 tackles for loss. Hays Marionneaux '28 added four stops and Nolan Novak '29 picked off a pass.

Andre Lopez '30 paced Grinnell's rushing attack with 47 yards and Kingston Ross '30 had 27 receiving yards. Will Weber '29 completed five passes for 55 yards.

Grinnell's first two possessions ended on downs and with a punt before the Pioneers put together a 14-play, 51-yard drive that went to the Blueboys' 12-yard line. Weber had a 13-yard rush on the series that concluded with Feldman's field goal.

The Pioneers couldn't penetrate enemy territory again as Illinois College, 3-3 overall and 2-2 in the league, secured the victory.

Grinnell plays at Lawrence University next Saturday. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
