Pioneer football team finishes with flurry of points to top Lawrence

Grinnell has 4 victories for first time since 2011

APPLETON, Wis. - It took a bit for the Grinnell College football team to get going Saturday afternoon, but once the Pioneers did there was no stopping them.

The Pioneers rallied from a 7-0 deficit, scoring the final 28 points of the game on their way to a 28-7 victory at Lawrence University in Midwest Conference play.

Grinnell improved to 4-3, giving the Pioneers their most victories in a season since 2011. Grinnell upped its league mark to 3-2, while Lawrence fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the MWC.

The Pioneers stretched their winning streak against Lawrence to six games dating back to the 2021 season.

Saturday's victory saw Grinnell erupt for 22 points in just over 10 minutes of the fourth period. Highlighting that span was a 63-yard touchdown run by Andre Lopez '30, who finished with 121 yards on 15 carries.

Defensively, Luke Konczal '29 tied a season-best with 16 tackles.

Lawrence scored on its opening drive and held the 7-0 lead until Ryan Feldman '29 booted a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the half. Feldman added a 32-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to bring the Pioneers within 7-6.

After forcing a Viking punt, Grinnell promptly went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive that lasted into the fourth period. Riley Spencer '30 had a 25-yard rush on the series and Lopez a 17-yard ruh before Will Weber '29 found Jack Reed '27 on 27 on a 17-yard TD pass with 12:38 left in the game. Kingston Ross '30 scored on the two-point try, making it 14-7.

The Vikings drove deep into Pioneers territory on their next series before being stopped on downs. Four plays into Grinnell's next series, Lopez broke loose for his 63-yard TD. Feldman's point after was good, putting the score at 21-7.

Hays Marionneaux '28 stopped Lawrence's next drive with an interception deep in Viking territory. It took just two plays for Weber to score from 14 yards out. Feldman's point after accounted for the final score.

Weber completed 5-of-7 passes for 63 yards and Reed was the top receiver with three catches for 47 yards. Other defensive leaders for Grinnell were Adam Whalen '28 with five tackles, Mapalo Mwabi '30 with two pickoffs and Hayden Lyday '30 with two tackles for loss.

Grinnell hosts Cornell College next Saturday at Rosenbloom Field. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
