Big inning propels Grinnell baseball team to victory over Nebraska Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. - A massive second inning was all Grinnell College's baseball team needed on its way to a 10-6 victory at Nebraska Wesleyan University in the opening game of a twin bill Friday.

The Pioneers erupted for seven runs in the second frame and added solo runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh frames.

In the second inning, Connor Pink '29 and Sam Koehler '28 were each hit by pitches with the bases loaded, Jacob Gaynor '28 belted a two-run single to right, Stuart Cash '27 plated a run with a single to right, Joe Chanis '27 walked with the bases loaded and Connor Goodson '26 lifted a sacrifice fly to right.

Goodson added an RBI double to left-center in the fourth, Gaynor walked with the bases loaded in the sixth and Wyatt Raymond '28 hit an RBI double to left-center in the seventh.

Goodson led Grinnell's nine-hit attack by going 3-for-4 at the plate, while Gaynor had two hits.

Jakob Runkel '26 had a solid starting pitching effort in collecting the win, striking out six and scattering five hits in four innings.

In Friday's second game, the Prairie Wolves broke out to a 5-0 lead and made it stick for a 5-4 victory.

Cash and Goodson each had two hits for Grinnell. Ryan Jackson '29 hit an RBI single to left for Grinnell in the seventh to provide Grinnell its first run, Nikolas Ruden's '26 fielder's choice in the eighth plated another run and Goodson lifted a two-run single to right in the ninth.

Shea Goel '28 was the pitcher of record, striking out three in three innings of work.

Grinnell is now 1-3, while the Prairie Wolves moved to 1-1. The teams meet for two more games Saturday.
