Grinnell snaps 7-game losing streak in return to Iowa

PELLA, Iowa - A return to Iowa meant good things for the Grinnell College baseball team Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers, who were riding a seven-game losing streak from their spring break trip to Tennessee and Florida, broke out the bats in an 11-4 victory at Central College.

The win pushed Grinnell to 4-11 on the season ahead of Monday's home opener against Augsburg University.

Grinnell never trailed in the game after scoring twice in the top of the first inning. Ben Skiles '28, Connor Goodson '26, Joe Chanis '27, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Ryan Jackson '29 all had two hits in Grinnell's balanced hitting attack.

Shea Goel '28 tossed six-hit ball and struck out six batters in six innings while getting the pitching victory for the Pioneers. Jakob Runkel '26 worked the last three innings, issuing just two hits and striking out four to get the save.

The Pioneers used an RBI double by Goodson and run-scoring single by Chanis to grab a 2-0 lead right off the bat. Grinnell made it 3-0 in the fifth when Goodson's groundout plated Stuart Cash '27.

Central, 6-10 on the season, got a run in the bottom of the fifth before the Pioneers countered with four in the top of the sixth. Jacob Gaynor '28 was issued a bases-loaded walk, Cooper Rabin '29 scored on a passed ball and Skiles whipped a two-run double to make it 7-1.

After the Dutch scored in the bottom of the sixth, both teams scored once in the seventh. Grinnell's run came on a bases-loaded walk by Skiles.

Central scored again in the eighth to make it 8-4 before Nikolas Ruden '26 belted a two-run triple to right-center and later scored on a passed ball in the ninth to make it 11-4. Runkel sat the Dutch down in order in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory.

Grinnell's twin bill against Augsburg on Monday is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Pioneer Park.
