Pioneer baseball team continues winning ways with sweep of Augsburg

GRINNELL, Iowa - After enduring a lengthy losing streak in recent weeks, there now seems to be no stopping the Grinnell College baseball team.

Grinnell ran its winning streak to three games on a bright and sunny Monday afternoon at Pioneer Park, claiming their home-opener doubleheader against Augsburg University by scores of 6-3 and 4-3.

The Pioneers used a thrilling comeback to win the second game, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh to claim victory. Joe Chanis '27 and Nikolas Ruden '26 each walked in the seventh before stealing bases. Wyatt Raymond '28 followed with an RBI single up the middle and then, with two out, a wild pitch allowed Ruden to score the game-winner.

Grinnell (6-11) had seven hits in the game, including two apiece by Chanis, Connor Goodson '26 and Raymond. Four Grinnell pitchers combined on a six-hit performance, with Ian Gunn '27 working the last 1.1 innings to get the victory.

The Pioneers broke out to a 2-0 lead in the game with a third-inning RBI single by Goodson and run-scoring single by Stuart Cash '27 in the fifth. Augsburg (0-2) answered with one run in the sixth and two in the seventh to go ahead 3-2, setting up the Pioneers' late heroics.

Grinnell won the opener despite being out-hit 10-4. Jackson Gutta '27 struck out two batters in four innings as the Pioneers' starting pitcher and Adam Gallegos '28 got the win, fanning three in the final three frames.

Goodson's sacrifice fly put Grinnell ahead 1-0 in the first, but the Auggies gained a 2-0 lead in the second. After that it was all Pioneers. Ben Skiles '28 hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth and, in the sixth, Ryan Jackson '29 walked with the bases loaded, Cooper Rabin '29 hit an RBI single, Jacob Gaynor '28 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Skiles plated a run on a fielder's choice.

The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday with a doubleheader at Knox College.
