Grinnell keeps its winning ways going as Raymond ties school home run record

GALESBURG, Ill. - Grinnell College's baseball team remained lightning-hot Saturday, getting a school-record performance and blowing past Knox College in a doubleheader to open Midwest Conference play.

The Pioneers opened the day in a slugfest, rapping out 16 hits and taking advantage of eight Prairie Fire errors in a 20-13 victory. Grinnell finished off the sweep with a 15-8 victory, running its winning streak to five games.

Wyatt Raymond '28 tied the school record for home runs in the second contest with three round-trippers. That matched the mark held by a handful of others, most recently Luke Porter in 2023.

Three big innings propelled Grinnell in the opener as the Pioneers tallied five runs in both the first and seventh frames and put up nine in the fourth inning.

Ben Skiles '28 led Grinnell's balanced hitting attack with three hits, while Joe Chanis '27, Connor Goodson '26, Ryan Jackson '29, Cooper Rabin '29 and Jacob Gaynor '28 added two apiece.

Goodson belted a three-run homer to open the scoring in the first and Rabin hit an RBI single, while Raymond hit a run-scoring single in the second. Goodson belted a two-run double to spark the fourth inning, Jackson and Chanis each hit two-run singles and Skiles added an RBI single.

In the seventh, Skiles plated three runs with a triple and Chanis hit a sacrifice fly.

Four Grinnell pitchers got work in the game, with Daniel Shaul '26 getting the win by tossing 2.1 innings.

Grinnell pounded out 20 hits in the second game, a figure that ranks ninth in GC history. Stuart Cash '27 led the charge with four hits and Nikolas Ruden '26, Raymond and Jackson added three each.

The Pioneers shot out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, with Skiles whopping a two-run homer, Raymond getting a solo home run and Maddux Anderson '29 delivering a sacrifice fly. Ruden hit a two-run single in the fourth to put Grinnell ahead 7-0 before the Prairie Fire got on the board.

Goodson hit an RBI single in the sixth as Grinnell (8-11, 2-0 MWC) went up 8-1. Knox (2-16, 0-2 MWC) answered with a big bottom of the sixth to pull within 8-6, and crawled within 8-7 in the seventh.

Raymond belted a three-run homer in the eighth and Gaynor hit a sacrifice fly. Raymond also had a three-run home run in the ninth to boost his RBI total to seven in the game, fourth in GC history.

Starting pitcher Jakob Runkel '26 got the victory, fanning six batters in five innings.

The series moves to Grinnell on Sunday, where the teams play a single game at Pioneer Park. The first pitch is set for noon.
