Grinnell baseball team wins in walkoff fashion in series finale against Knox

Goodson's 2-run blast sparks come-from-behind victory

GRINNELL, Iowa - After displaying they can win by large margins against Knox College, the Grinnell College baseball team proved it can be victorious in the nail-biters, too.

That was the case Sunday at Pioneer Park, as the hosts got a walkoff two-run homer by Connor Goodson '26 to clip the Prairie Fire 9-8 in Midwest Conference play.

That capped a spectacular rally by the Pioneers, who trailed 8-6 through seven innings.

Grinnell (9-11, 3-0 MWC) got one run back in the bottom of the eighth when Ben Skiles '28 hit into a fielder's choice to plate a run to make it 8-7. In the ninth, Nikolas Ruden '26 opened the frame with a single through the left side before Goodson came to the plate. After taking two pitches, Goodson sent a monstrous shot over the left-center field fence to deliver the victory and send the host school into celebration.

Knox (2-17, 0-3 MWC) outhit Grinnell 13-11. For the Pioneers, Goodson had three hits and Ruden, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Stuart Cash '27 added two apiece.

The Prairie Fire took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Goodson's two-run double to right-center and Cash's RBI single through the left side put the hosts ahead 3-1 in the bottom of the frame.

Goodson added an RBI single to right in the second and Raymond plated a run with a single through the right side as Grinnell led 5-3 after two frames. Knox eventually went ahead 6-5 before Raymond continued his wild week by belting a solo homer to left-center to tie the game.

The Prairie Fire scored twice in the sixth inning to go ahead by two and set up the thrilling finish.

David Hass '29, the fourth of four Grinnell pitchers, earned the victory. He scattered four hits and fanned one batter in three innings of work

Grinnell is slated to play a trio of games at Ripon College this weekend.
