Grinnell off to red-hot start at Wartburg men's golf invite

Spencer Moody grabs 1st-round lead for Pioneers

Results

WAVERLY, Iowa - It was an impressive performance by the Grinnell College men's golf team, to say the least, on the opening day of the Wartburg Spring Invite Saturday.

Behind Spencer Moody's '29 tourney-leading round of 2-under-par 70, Grinnell shot out to a runner-up spot in the team standings at Prairie Links.

Moody's steady round consisted of four birdies as he holds a one-shot lead in the field of 96.

As a team, Grinnell is tied with Upper Iowa for second place at 297. That score ranks ninth in Pioneer history and trails leader Kirkwood Community College by just one stroke in the 17-team meet.

Everett Williams '29 is in sixth place with a 73, while Roger Smith '28 shot a 74 and is in 10th place. Williams posted four birdies on Saturday and Smith had a pair.

Also for Grinnell, Max Shin '29 shot an 80, Josh Udelson '29 added an 82 and Harrison Elliott '29 fired an 83. Elliott had two birdies, while Shin and Udelson tallied one apiece.

The meet concludes Sunday.
