Pioneer baseball team stays hot in Midwest Conference play with sweep of Lawrence

GRINNELL, Iowa - The hot times continue for Grinnell College's baseball team.

The Pioneers remained unbeaten at home this season and won their 10th game in the last 11 outings by sweeping Lawrence University on a cold and gray Saturday afternoon.

The Pioneers remained atop the Midwest Conference standings with a 7-1 mark while improving to 13-12 overall.

Grinnell used timely hitting and a phenomenal pitching performance from Shea Goel '28 and Jakob Runkel '26 to capture the opener at Pioneer Park by a 7-2 score. Goel worked five innings, scattering six hits and striking out three. Runkel went the rest of the way for the save, also striking out three and giving up four hits.

The Pioneers rode an 11-hit offensive attack, with Ben Skiles '28 and Connor Goodson '26 getting three apiece and Nikolas Ruden '26 adding two.

Grinnell got a run in the second inning on Skiles' single and never looked back. Goodson added an RBI single in the seventh for a 2-0 edge. After the Vikings scored in the top of the eighth to slice the gap in half, the Pioneers erupted for five runs in the bottom of the inning as Ruden hit an RBI single, Goodson plated two runs with a double and Wyatt Raymond '28 blasted a two-run homer to center.

The Pioneers scored in all but one inning of the second game, a 17-6, seven-inning victory. Raymond had four of Grinnell's 13 hits, while Goodson and Stuart Cash '27 had two apiece. Joshua Chung '28 was the winning pitcher.

Cash had an RBI double in the second, Ruden hit a two-run single in the third and Raymond followed with a run-scoring single for a 4-0 Grinnell lead.

Lawrence, 3-6 in the MWC and 7-19 overall, cut the gap in half with two runs in the fourth before Grinnell blew the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the inning. Two runs came across on errors, Goodson hit an RBI double, Ryan Jackson '28 hit an RBI single, Skiles pushed across two runs with a single and Raymond scored on a wild pitch for an 11-2 lead.

The Pioneers put up three runs in the fifth on Jackson's sacrifice fly and a two-run error. Maddux Anderson '29 belted a two-run triple down the right-field line in the sixth to complete Grinnell's scoring.

The teams finish their three-game set Sunday at Pioneer Park with a single game. The first pitch is at noon.
