Lawrence takes series finale from Grinell baseball team in rain-shortened affair

GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College and Lawrence University did battle on the baseball diamond Sunday, but in the end Mother Nature was the winner.

The third and final game of the series was called entering the seventh inning due to an unplayable field at Pioneer Park with the Vikings being awarded the 4-2 victory.

What began as sunny but windy conditions quickly eroded into gray skies and an eventual downpour that halted action in the fifth inning. After tarping the field, play resumed after 45 minutes and was again halted, this time for good, at the end of the sixth inning.

Lawrence scored twice in the top of the first inning and never trailed while preventing the hosts from getting the series sweep.

Jackson Gutta '27 was tagged with the pitching loss despite striking out four in three innings of work. David Haas '29 and Connor Pink '29 followed with stellar relief, with Haas issuing one hit in one inning and Pink tossing hitless ball and fanning two in the final two innings.

Grinnell (13-13, 7-2 Midwest Conference) sliced the Vikings' lead in half in the second inning on Stuart Cash's '27 solo homer. Lawrence (8-19, 4-6 MWC) scored twice in the third inning for a 4-1 lead, but the Pioneers got one back in the bottom of the fourth on Wyatt Raymond's '28 RBI double.

The Pioneers are back in action Wednesday at Cornell College.
