Grinnell baseball team rallies not once, but twice, from 5-0 deficits to sweep away Beloit

Pioneers take 2 games in key MWC doubleheader

GRINNELL, Iowa - Playing its biggest doubleheader of the season, Grinnell College's baseball team proved no deficit is unsurmountable.

Facing Beloit College in a battle of top Midwest Conference teams, Grinnell rallied from 5-0 deficits in both games to earn the Saturday sweep. Grinnell won the opener on a cold and windy day at Pioneer Park by a 10-8 score, and then disposed of the Bucs 17-5 in seven innings.

Grinnell, which saw school-record performances by Stuart Cash '27 and Jacob Gaynor '28 in the second game, improved to 9-2 in the MWC and 15-13 overall. The Pioneers are off to their best start in league play in nine years.

In the second game, Cash tied the school mark for home runs in a contest and Gaynor tied the mark for walks in a game. Cash's three homers tied the mark established seven other times, including twice this year. Gaynor's four walks evened the record also held by five others and most recently accomplished by Niko Takayesu in 2017.

Jakob Runkel '26 came on in relief in the first inning of the opener for Grinnell and held Beloit down, tossing 4.1 innings of three-hit ball and striking out one while picking up the win. Twice he and the Pioneer defense got the hosts out of bases-loaded jams.

Joshua Chung '28 relieved Runkel and struck out one in two innings and Connor Pink '29 threw hitless ball over the final two innings and fanned three to get the save.

Wyatt Raymond '28 led Grinnell's 14-hit attack with four hits. After Beloit, 9-5 in the MWC and 16-14 overall, scored five runs in the first the Pioneers clawed their way back. Connor Goodson '26 hit an RBI single in the first and added a three-run double in the second to go with an RBI single by Joe Chanis '27 to tie things at 5-all.

Ben Skiles '28 plated two runs in the third inning and Raymond hit an RBI double in the fourth to go with Cash's RBI single, making it 9-5. Nikolas Ruden '26 ended the scoring in the fifth with an RBI.

Not only did Grinnell rap out 17 hits in the second game, but had a spectacular relief pitching performance by David Haas '29. Haas came on in the third inning and worked 3.2 innings of two-hit ball, fanning five in the process and earning the win. Ian Gunn '26 finished off the victory.

Cash had four hits to lead the offense and Goodson added three. After Beloit went up 5-0 in the top of the third, the Pioneers tallied six runs in the bottom. Cash blasted a three-run homer, while Goodson, Raymond and Skiles all hit run-scoring singles.

Grinnell blasted three homers in the fifth inning, as Nikolas Ruden '26 slugged a grand slam and Goodson and Cash each had solo shots. That gave Grinnell five homers for the game, which is third-most in program history. Also in the fifth, Chanis drew a bases-loaded walk. The Pioneers finished their scoring in the sixth on Ryan Jackson's '29 RBI single.

Cash had 13 total bases on the game, which ranks third in program history, while Maddux Anderson's '29 two doubles are ninth.

The teams finish off their series Sunday with a single game at Pioneer Park. The first pitch is at noon.
