Smith leads Grinnell's charge at Forester Spring Invite

MUNDELEIN, Ill. - Fresh off winning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Men's Golf Performer of the Week honor, Grinnell College's Roger Smith '28 is continuing to impress.

Smith recorded a 2-under-par 70, a score that ranks 12th in program history, on the opening day of the Forester Spring Invite Friday. Smith, who posted six birdies on the day at Countryside Golf Club, is tied for fourth in the 105-golfer field.

As a team, Grinnell is ninth among 19 squads with a 296. That score is 10th all-time at GC.

Spencer Moody '29 was next in line for Grinnell after Smith with a 2-over-par 74, good for 31st place, and Josh Udelson '29 came in at 75. Also for the Pioneers, Everett Williams '29 shot 77, Max Shin '29 added a 78 and Harrison Elliott '29 fired an 88. Moody had two birdies on the day and the other four Pioneers tallied one apiece.

Nick Buckman of the University of Wisconsin-Stout is the individual leader at 68, while UW-Stout and tourney host Lake Forest College leading the team race with 282s.

The tourney continues Saturday.
