Roger Smith breaks school mark while leading Pioneers to strong finish at Forester Spring Invite

MUNDELEIN, Ill. - With the aid of a Roger Smith's '28 individual school-record score for 36 holes, Grinnell College men's golf team jumped up two spots on the final day of the Forester Spring Invite Saturday.


Smith followed Friday's round of 70 with a 3-under-par 69 at Mundelein Golf Club, giving him a two-day score of 5-under-par 139. That bettered the previous school record of 142 established by Craig Junio in 1989.

Smith, whose single-day round of 69 ranks eighth in program history, posted five birdies in his round, 11 pars and just two bogeys. He tied for second in a field of 105 golfers while defeating several nationally-ranked players. Christian Wakeford of Aurora was the winner, just one shot in front of Smith.

Grinnell jumped from ninth to seventh in the final standings of the 19-team event with a 295 for an overall total of 591, the second-best 36-hole score in program history. Saturday's score is 10th all-time at GC.

Spencer Moody '29 tied for 17th, firing a 73 for a total of 147. That overall total is 14th in GC history. He had two birdies Saturday. Everett Williams '29 tied for 21st with a 148, recording a 1-under-par 71 on Saturday with the aid of three birdies. His overall total is 20th all-time at GC.

Also for Grinnell, Max Shin '29 shot 82 on Saturday, Josh Udelson '29 added an 86 and Harrison Elliott '29 had a 93. Their totals were 160, 161 and 181, respectively. Udelson and Elliott each had one birdie.

Aurora won the team title with a 570.

Grinnell will take part in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Championships starting Monday.
