Grinnell baseball team slugs its way to MWC Tournament berth

MONMOUTH, Ill. - After losing two games by the mercy rule on Saturday, the Grinnell College baseball team returned the favor at Monmouth College Sunday.

The Pioneers slugged their way to a Midwest Conference Tournament berth, pounding out 18 hits and riding a seven-hit pitching performance by two players to a 15-4, eight-inning victory.

Grinnell improved to 13-4 in the MWC, a half-game behind Illinois College for first place, while moving to 19-15 overall. Monmouth fell to 9-9 in the league and 13-20 overall.

Joe Chanis '27, Connor Goodson '26 and Jacob Gaynor '28 sparked Grinnell's offense with three hits each and Connor Pink '29, Wyatt Raymond '28 and Ryan Jackson '29 added two each.

On the mound, Lucas Petrikas '29 and Adam Gallegos '28 shut down the Fighting Scots. Petrikas earned the victory, scattering five hits and striking out two in six innings. Gallegos tossed two-hit ball over the last two innings and fanned one.

The Pioneers broke out to a 9-0 lead through two innings, scoring four in the first frame on RBI singles by Nikolas Ruden '26 and Maddux Anderson '29 and two-run homer from Raymond. In the second, Mitch Baek '29 hit a two-run single, Ruden and Anderson walked with the bases loaded and Goodson pushed across a run on a fielder's choice.

After Monmouth scored three times, Goodson hit an RBI single in the third and three-run homer in the fifth for a 15-3 lead. Grinnell got its final runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Chanis and run-scoring single from Gaynor.

On GC's all-time season chart, Raymond is now second in homers with 12 and Goodson is second in RBIs with 54. Goodson and Ruden rank fourth and sixth in runs scored with 43 and 42, respectively, while Ruden moved to seventh in RBIs with 48. In total bases, Goodson is seventh with 94 and Raymond is 10th with 91.

Goodson and Raymond now rank third and seventh in career homers with 23 and 20, while Goodson moved to sixth in total bases with 241.


The Pioneers have a big final week of the regular season, traveling to Cornell College on Tuesday to make up a postponed game before hosting Illinois College in three games next weekend to determine the MWC champ and tourney host.
