CASEYVILLE, Ill. - The Grinnell College men's golf team has been on fire in recent weeks, and that trend continued Sunday on the opening day of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) Championships.

The Pioneers recorded their fifth-best score in program history, firing a 290 at Far Oaks Golf Club to lead runner-up Lake Forest College by two strokes in the 13-team field. Mississippi University for Women was third with 298.

Four Grinnell golfers were within three shots of each other, led by Spencer Moody's '29 1-under-par round of 71. He recorded four birdies and is tied for fifth in the 64-player field.

Josh Udelson '29 is tied for seventh at 72, Everett Williams '29 is tied for ninth at 73 and Roger Smith '28 is tied for 13th at 74. Williams had one of the day's bigger highlights, posting an eagle on the par-5, 507-yard first hole. He also had three birdies, while Udelson had five and Smith four. Max Shin '29, with one birdie, tallied a 78.

Three golfers are tied for first with 70s.
