Grinnell baseball team brushes off the cold to remain hot in Midwest Conference play

Pioneers off to best start in league since 2017

GRINNELL, Iowa - Grinnell College's baseball team wasn't fazed in the slightest by Tuesday's frigid temperatures and wind as the hosts swept Cornell College in a doubleheader at Pioneer Park.

The 11-1 and 9-1 victories propelled Grinnell to 5-1 in the Midwest Conference, its best start to league play since the 2017 season.

Grinnell, 11-12 in all games, disposed of the Rams in eight innings in the opener. Three Pioneer pitchers combined on five-hitter, with reliever Daniel Shaul '26 earning the victory and Jakob Runkel '26 getting the save.

The Pioneers' 11-hit attack was led by Wyatt Raymond '28 with three and Nikolas Ruden '26, Connor Goodson '26 and Stuart Cash '27 adding two apiece.

Cash broke a scoreless tie with an RBI single to left-center in the fourth inning. Cornell tied the game in the fifth, but the Pioneers followed with two runs in the bottom of the frame on Ruden's bases-loaded walk and Goodson's RBI groundout.

In the seventh, the Pioneers scored four runs as Ruden hit an RBI double to left, Raymond plated a run with a single to left and Cash knocked in two more with a double to right-center.

Grinnell finished off the victory with four more runs in the eighth as Joe Chanis '27 hit an RBI single up the middle, Ruden plated a run with a single to right, Raymond hit a run-scoring infield single and Goodson scored on a wild pitch.

The Pioneers got a six-hit pitching effort from four players in the second game. Joshua Chung '28 got the victory, striking out two in 1.1 innings. Starter David Haas '29 also fanned two batters.

Offensively, Chanis, Ruden, Goodson, Raymond, Cash and Connor Pink '29 all had two hits in a 14-hit output.

Grinnell scored twice in the third frame on an error and Goodson's sacrifice fly to center, while Ben Skiles '28 hit a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth inning and Chanis added a sacrifice fly to left.

The Pioneers pushed their lead to 8-0 in the fifth on a two-run single through the right side by Maddux Anderson '29 and another RBI from Pink. Cornell, 3-5 in the MWC and 11-13 overall, scored in the seventh while an error allowed Grinnell to score in the eighth.

The Pioneers entertain Lawrence University in a three-game set this weekend, with two games set for Saturday and one for Sunday.
