Pioneer women's golfers shoot out to early lead at Wartburg Fall Invite

WAVERLY, Iowa - Grinnell College's women's golf team used steady performances from several contributors to take the first-round lead at the Wartburg Fall Invitational Saturday.

Madison Chen '30 began her collegiate career on a resounding note, firing an even-par 72 at Prairie Links Golf Club to earn a tie for first-place in the 91-golfer field.

Saya Geisendorfer '27 and Waverly Yang '28 each added 76s, good for 13th-place ties, while Meilin Hoshino '27 shot 77. Sammi Nguyen '30 checked in at 79, Caroline Hoang '30 and Emily Lackershire '27 added 80s and Coco He '30 shot 83.

He had the shot of the day, an eagle on the par-5, 456-yard second hole. Chen, Geisendorfer, Yang and Hoshino all had three birdies on the day, Lackershire added two and Hoang and He tallied one apiece.

Grinnell shot a 301 as a team and is three shots in front of runner-up University of Dubuque in the 15-team meet that concludes Sunday.
