After a spectacular run in recent games, Grinnell College’s Vinny Curta ’19 has been named the Midwest Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week.
Curta, a 6-5 guard from Oak Lawn, Ill. (Dwight D. Eisenhower) shattered the 64-year-old MWC record for free throws in a career as the Pioneers went 3-0 over the week to move to 4-0 in the league. Curta made seven free throws in a 121-104 win over Cornell College Wednesday to break the league record of 583 career free throws by Pete Kovacs of Monmouth College from 1951-55. He scored 27 points in that game and matched that in a 129-61 win over Knox College.
He then tallied 33 points in a 140-107 victory over Colorado College to push the Pioneers to 8-2 overall, their best start to a season since 2013-14. For the week, Curta averaged 29 points, 7.7 assists and 4.3 rebounds a game and also shot 54.7 percent from the field.
