Grinnell College Athletics Hall of Fame
Barry Huff '73 participated in three sports at Grinnell, and won awards in all three. He was a lineman on the football team and was on the indoor and outdoor track teams. Huff won four letters each in indoor track and outdoor track, and three letters in football. On the gridiron, Huff was elected Most Valuable Lineman in 1972. In a game against Coe, he kicked a record-tying field goal of 47 yards for the win. As a member of the track team, Huff competed in the shot put and the discus, and he earned champion honors in both for multiple years. In 1973, he was voted the track team's Most Valuable Player for his talents as a thrower. At the Midwest Conference Indoor Track Meet in 1971 and 1973, Huff won the shot put competition. In fact, he never place lower than third, and that was in his first year. In 1972, he placed second in the shot put at the indoor meet. Outdoors, Huff was the undefeated Midwest Conference champ in the shot put three years in a row (1971-73) and in the discus two years in a row (1972-73). He also won the shot put at the Cornell Relays three times, 1971-73; at the Grinnell Relays, he won the event three times, 1970-72. Upon graduation, Huff held the record for the outdoor shot put at 51'3" - a record that still stands 34 years later. Since graduation, Huff has participated in several Grinnell College Intramural Racquetball Championships, individually and in the mixed doubles category. Academically, Huff went on to earn an M.A. in speech and theater from the University of Michigan, and an M.B.A. in marketing and industrial relations from the University of Iowa. He taught high school English and theatre, and coached the football and track teams. He coached football and track at Grinnell College while serving as associate dean of students, before moving on to a business management career with The Pillsbury Company. Huff has held many leadership positions with various businesses and nonprofit organizations, most recently as president of Glory Foods. Since 1969, he has demonstrated his loyalty to Grinnell as a volunteer.
