Dennis Asby '63 wore the scarlet and black during the golden years of the early 60's. A three-sport man, Asby helped the Pioneers to two Midwest Conference championships in football, one in basketball, and two in track. As a sophomore, Asby made his presence felt immediately on the gridiron as a two-way starter at offensive and defensive tackle. The Pioneers outgained their opponents on the ground by over 700 yards that season. Denny made an impact in the track program by placing second in the shot put and fifth in the discus at the league meet. In 1961 Asby helped the gridders to their first conference titleby paving the way for a potent backfield which averaged 264 yards rushing per game. Defensively the Pioneers posted three shutouts. Denny's work was not done, however, as he emerged as a solid role player on Grinnell's championship basketball unit. In track Asby launched the discus a school-record 149' 4.5" to place second in the conference. Denny was a senior co-captain in football when the Pioneers won another loop crown with a 7-0-1 record. Asby was voted first team all-conference at defensive tackle and second team at offensive tackle, and he also earned team most valuable lineman honors. A starter on the basketball team, the power forward completed his athletic career by scoring 8.9 points per game. A graduate of the University of Iowa medical school, Asby is a physician/internist in Portland, Ore.
