Pioneer women's tennis team earns spot in MWC Team Championships with win

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's tennis squad wrapped up a spot in the four-team Midwest Conference Team Championships Saturday with a 9-0 victory over Cornell College at the Bear Center Fieldhouse.

The victory pushed Grinnell to 4-1 in the MWC South Division and 8-3 overall, while the Rams fell to 3-2 in the division and 8-5 in all contests.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell rolled past Beloit College 8-1.

In the win over Cornell, Grinnell swept singles play with Laura Krull '13, Shirlene Luk '15, Clothilde Thirouin '14, Constanza Alarcon '13, Hanna Feldman '14 and Emily Groth '14. Groth lost just one game in her sweep and Feldman just two games.

In doubles, the teams of Luk-Thirouin, Krull-Catherine Fitch '13 and Feldman-Julia Rumley '16 all won. The latter two were victorious by 8-1 scores.

Grinnell also swept doubles against Beloit with the teams of Luk-Thirouin, Alarcon-Fitch and Feldman-Rumley. The Pioneers won Nos. 1 through 5 singles with Luk, Thirouin, Alarcon, Feldman and Fitch. Thirouin and Feldman lost just one game each.

“This was a nice way to conclude our dual match season,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “I thought our team showed its collective depth and I was especially pleased with our doubles play.

“It was nice for our three senior lineup players, Constanza, Catherine and Laura, to cap their traditional seasons with solid play,” he added. “Their classmate, Kelsey Scott '13, also saw action in exhibition and was victorious in both her matches.”

Hamilton and the Pioneers are excited for the upcoming MWC Championships. “After struggling through injuries and having various lineups, I'm excited everything has come together at the correct time as we move into the conference championships,” he said.
