Pioneers roll by Rockford in season opener

Box Score WAVERLY, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team got off on the right foot for its 2012-13 season, beating Rockford College 130-101 Friday night in the opening round of the Wartburg College Tournament.

With the win, the Pioneers will meet either Wartburg or Crown College in the title game at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Grinnell had six players score in double figures, led by Griffin Lentsch '13 with 23 points. Patrick Maher '14 and Jack Taylor '15 added 19 points each, Luke Yeager '15 scored 18, Jesse Ney '13 added 12 and Aaron Levin '14 tossed in 10.

Yeager was 6-of-11 from 3-point land and Ney hit 4-of-7 treys. Joe Rogers '13 grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, Maher dished out four assists and Rogers, Maher, Taylor, Levin, Dominique Bellamy '13 and Cody Olson '14 had two steals apiece.

After Rockford scored the opening bucket, Grinnell roared back by tallying 14 of the next 18 points. Yeager had a pair of treys in that span.

Rockford rallied within 18-16, only to see the Pioneers respond with a nine-point run on treys by Ney, Taylor and Lentsch for a 27-16 edge.

Grinnell continued to roll to lead comfortably at halftime and sailed to victory from there.
