Grinnell men's basketball team claims title at Wartburg Tournament

Box Score WAVERLY, Iowa – The Grinnell College men's basketball team claimed the title at the Wartburg College Tournament Saturday with a 111-100 victory over Crown College.

Griffin Lentsch '13 and Jack Taylor '15 were named to the All-Tournament Team for the Pioneers, who improved to 2-0.

Taylor scored a game-high 28 points with the aid of a perfect 13-of-13 free throw percentage. He also hit a trio of 3-pointers.

Lentsch added 21 points as he hit 10-of-11 charity shots. Others in double figures for Grinnell were Aaron Levin '14 with 14 points and Patrick Maher '14 with 12. Levin was 4-of-10 from the 3-point stripe.

Maher led the team in rebounds with six, while Taylor had four assists and four steals. Others with four steals were Luke Yeager '15 and Maher.

As a team, Grinnell hit 40-of-52 shots from the free throw line. Anthony DiLoreto scored 25 points for Crown, 1-1 on the season.

The first half was back and forth much of the way with Grinnell holding a 52-45 lead at its conclusion. Crown came within five early in the second half before the Pioneers went on a 14-5 run for a 66-52 lead. Yeager, Levin, Taylor and Jesse Ney '13 all had 3-pointers during the spurt while Lentsch added a two-point basket.

Grinnell went up by as many as 17 before Crown roared back, closing the gap to 92-91 with 4:21 to play. It was still a two-point game when the Pioneers all but sealed the deal with a 10-0 run as Lentsch hit four free throws, Rogers added a layup and two free throws and Taylor made a jumper to make it 109-97 with :34 left.

The Pioneers have their first home action of the season Tuesday when Faith Baptist College of Ankeny visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 7 p.m.
