Pioneers fall to William Penn in battle of unbeatens

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa –  In a battle of men's basketball unbeatens, William Penn University worked past Grinnell College 131-116 before a packed house of 1,711 fans Sunday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.

Poor shooting hurt the Pioneers, as they were just 33.6 percent from the field and 27.7 percent from 3-point land. William Penn, on the other hand, hit 62.5 percent of its field goals.

Five players scored in double figures for the Pioneers, who fell to 3-1 on the season. Griffin Lentsch '13 led the way with 28 points, while Jack Taylor '15 added 21, Aaron Levin '14 scored 18, Patrick Maher '14 poured in 13 and Luke Yeager '15 tagged on 12.

Joe Rogers '13 grabbed nine rebounds, while Marques Valdez '13 and Levin had six apiece. Maher dished out six assists and Taylor had five, while Yeager and Valdez came up with three steals apiece.

Brandon Beasley scored 26 points for the 12-0 Statesmen, who are ranked 19th in the preseason NAIA Division III national rankings.

William Penn shot out to a 10-0 lead before Grinnell fought back, eventually closing the gap to two points when Levin's layup made it 16-14. Grinnell later got within one at 18-17 on a 3-pointer by Jesse Ney '13, but the Statesmen followed with an 8-0 run for a nine-point lead.

The Statesmen continued to roll, going up by as many as 17 before Grinnell closed the gap to 64-55 by halftime.

The Pioneers had trouble making a dent in the lead in the second half, never getting closer than eight before a 3-pointer by Lentsch made it a seven-point game at 114-107 with 4:35 left.

Another jumper by Lentsch a bit later made it 116-109, but William Penn followed with a five-point run and never looked back en route to the victory.

The Pioneers open up Midwest Conference play Wednesday with a game at Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
