Pioneers use 2nd-half rally to top Knox

Box Score GALESBURG, Ill. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team rallied to defeat Knox College 78-75 Wednesday night.

The Pioneers, 1-0 in the Midwest Conference and 1-2 on the season, trailed 43-40 at halftime before outscoring the hosts 38-32 in the final 20 minutes. Tolu Alabi '13 poured in a game-high 26 points on 11-of-16 field goal shooting while grabbing nine rebounds, while Rebecca DeGroot '14 had a game-high 10 boards.

Anne Boldt '13 added 18 points, DeGroot came up with three steals and Michelle Briggs '13 blocked three shots.

Knox dipped to 0-2 in the MWC and 0-4 in all games.

Knox got out to a 4-2 lead before Grinnell roared back with a 19-2 run to take command. Boldt had seven points during the run, while Abby Jaeger '14 and Karen Gogins '13 had four apiece.

However, the hosts stormed back to lead 43-40 at halftime.

The second half was tight before Grinnell went on a key 6-1. Leading just 68-65, Alabi sank two free throws and hit a jumper for a 72-65 edge with 5:45 remaining. After Knox hit a free throw, Alex Plemmons '15 made a jumper with 5:16 left to make it 74-66.

Grinnell built its lead as big as nine before winning by three.

The Pioneers host Ripon College Saturday at Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 1 p.m.
