Hot-shooting Blueboys knock off Grinnell

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Illinois College rode a hot shooting night en route to a 123-114 men's basketball victory over Grinnell College Tuesday night at Darby Gymnasium.

The Blueboys, who shot nearly 62 percent from the field and better than 56 percent from 3-point land, were paced by Nathan Kohler's 28 points.

Jack Taylor '15 led Grinnell with 37 points, including a 12-of-14 performance from the free throw line. He also had four assists as Grinnell made just 42.4 percent of its shots including a 25.9-percent performance from 3-point land.

Patrick Maher '14 had a solid game with 16 points, including 3-of-3 on treys, while also compiling game-highs of seven assists and four steals. Griffin Lentsch '13 and Luke Yeager '15 had 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Joe Rogers '13 came up with five rebounds and Aaron Levin '14 blocked three shots.

The visitors led virtually the entire first half before Grinnell used a 5-0 run to take a 53-48 lead as Taylor hit a 3-pointers and Levin sank a pair of free throws. However, the Blueboys rallied to tie things at 53-all by halftime.

There was one tie early in the second half before Illinois College went ahead to stay with a basket at the 18:38 mark. It was still close, with the Blueboys clinging to a two-point lead, before they went on an 11-1 run to go ahead 101-89 with 5:38 left.

The Pioneers could get no closer than six points down the stretch as the visitors held on to improve to 3-2 in the Midwest Conference and 4-4 overall.

Grinnell, 4-1 in the MWC and 7-2 in all games, does not play again until Jan. 2 when Beloit College visits Darby Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. game.
