Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College men's basketball team won for the first time at St. Norbert College since 2006 Saturday with a 105-94 decision Saturday afternoon.
The win pushes the Pioneers, who won for the first time in their last six tries in De Pere, to 4-0 in the Midwest Conference and 7-1 overall. The Green Knights, favored to win the Midwest Conference title, dropped to 2-2 in the league and 3-3 in all contests before a crrowd of more than 2,000.
Jack Taylor '15 had a game-high 36 points for Grinnell, while
Patrick Maher '14 and
Griffin Lentsch '13 had 16 and 15, respectively. Taylor hit 6-of-13 shots from 3-point land and made 12-of-13 free throws.
Maher had five assists,
Dominique Bellamy '13 and
Jesse Ney '13 had two steals each and
Joe Rogers '13 grabbed six rebounds.
St. Norbert led by eight points in the first half before an 11-3 run tied things up. Taylor and
Evan Johnson '15 had three points during the spurt, Maher and Taylor added two each and
Cody Olson '14 contributed one.
Grinnell kept it up and led 47-40 at halftime. The visitors went ahead by as many as 12 points in the second half before St. Norbert rallied for a 62-all tie with 12:24 left.
However, the Pioneers answered with an 11-2 run to take command to stay. Lentsch began things with two free throws, and Rogers added two more. Johnson nailed a trey, Maher sank a free throw and Taylor delivered a trey to make it 73-64 with 10:33 to go.
The hosts got as close as three points after that, but the Pioneers held command and won comfortably.
The Pioneers play their final home game before the holiday break when they host Illinois College on Tuesday night. Game time at Darby Gymnasium is set for 7 p.m.
