St. Norbert rallies to beat Pioneers in overtime

Box Score DE PERE, Wis. – The Grinnell College women's basketball team saw a 17-point second-half lead disappear as preseason Midwest Conference favorite St. Norbert College rallied for a 61-55 overtime victory Saturday afternoon.

The victory extended the Green Knights' perfect mark against Grinnell to 28 games as they improved to 3-1 in the MWC and 6-1 overall. Grinnell fell to 2-2 in the league and 3-4 in all games.

Alissa Hirsh '16 paced Grinnell with a game-high 20 points, while Tolu Alabi '13 and Anne Boldt '16 scored 13 each. Michelle Briggs '13 grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a pair of shots, while Abby Jaeger '14 and Boldt came up with two steals each.

Grinnell used a nine-point run to pull away in the first half, turning a 17-11 lead into a 26-11 cushion. Hirsh began things with a jumper, Boldt sank two free throws, Hirsh hit a jumper and free throw and Alabi sank a layup for the 15-point edge.

St. Norbert rallied to within 28-16 by halftime. The Pioneers opened the second half on fire, though, as Briggs hit a layup and Alabi followed with a free throw and jumper to make it 33-16 with 18:06 left.

However, St. Norbert gradually rallied and went ahead 48-47 with 2:36 remaining. Grinnell retook the lead on a layup and free throw by Boldt, but St. Norbert made it 50-all by the end of regulation to force overtime.

Grinnell grabbed a pair of leads in the extra period, once at 53-52 on Boldt's trey with 2:59 left and again at 55-53 when Hirsh hit a jumper at the 2:32 mark. However, the hosts finished the game with eight straight points for the victory.

The Pioneers play their final home game before the holiday break when they host Illinois College on Tuesday night. Game time at Darby Gymnasium is set for 5 p.m.
