Grinnell comeback falls short against MacMurray

Box Score Losing the turnover battle 21-10, the Grinnell College women's basketball team suffered a 62-56 setback to non-conference foe MacMurray College Monday at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers nearly rallied for the victory, thanks in part to Cristal Coleman '15. Coleman scored all of her team-high 17 points in the second half, including a sizzling 5-of-6 performance 3-point range during that span. Megan Huey '12 posted yet another double-double for Grinnell with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Ashley Jeannin '12 added five assists for the Pioneers, who fell to 11-11 on the season.

Fionnuala Toner had a game-high 20 points for the Highlanders, who moved to 9-13.

Grinnell trailed by as many as eight points in the first half before cutting the gap in half by intermission, entering the locker room down 27-23.

The visitors built their cushion to 15 with 9:19 left in the game before Coleman drained four consecutive treys to spark a 12-5 run that brought the hosts within 51-43 with 6:09 left.

Grinnell was still down by 10 with 4:18 left before Huey hit a jumper and Coleman buried a 3-ball to make it 56-51 with 1:43 remaining.

Grinnell got as close as three with :19 left on a 3-pointer by Jeannin that made it 59-56. However, Whittney Wade sank a free throw with :16 left to push the Highlanders ahead by four. After a missed 3-pointer by Grinnell, the visitors made two more charity shots with :03 left to close out the scoring.

The Pioneers finish out the regular season Saturday when Lake Forest College visits Darby Gymnasium for a Senior Day clash. The contest begins at 1 p.m., and a win by the Pioneers would keep them in contention for a spot in the Midwest Conference Tournament.
