Pioneers lose close contests at Greenville

Box Score The Grinnell College softball team battled well against Greenville College, but in the end the hosts posted wins of 5-1 and 6-4 Wednesday.

Grinnell managed four hits in the opener, including a double by Amanda Stromquist '12. Greenville scored solo runs in the first and third innings, but Grinnell cut the gap in half in the fifth. Jennifer Fulton '15 singled to lead off the inning, moved to second on Lindsay Fujimoto's '15 sacrifice, took third on a passed ball and scored on a wild pitch.

Greenville scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-1, which it remained the rest of the way.

Stromquist suffered the loss despite giving up just four hits and one earned run. She fanned two batters.

In the second game, Summer Wilke '15 and Stromquist both had three hits in Grinnell's eight-hit attack.

Greenville took a 4-0 lead in the first, but the Pioneers scratched out a run in the third as Aniela Wendt '14 and Wilke each singled before Wiebold knocked in a run on a fielder's choice.

Grinnell closed within 4-3 in the sixth as Stromquist singled and eventually crossed the plate and Jessica Menary '13 grounded out for an RBI.

The hosts made it 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Grinnell managed one run on Stromquist's RBI single that scored Wilke.

Fulton suffered the pitching loss, giving up three earned runs in two innings.

Greenville is now 3-11, while Grinnell fell to 0-6.
