Box Score The Grinnell College softball team gave the nation's third-ranked team a good run for a portion of Wednesday's opener in a twin bill, but host Coe College broke away for a 7-0 victory in Cedar Rapids.
The Kohawks finished the day with a 21-2 victory to move to 20-2 on the season. Grinnell fell to 1-9.
The Pioneers hung tight in the first game, giving up solo runs in the first and second innings. That 2-0 score remained until the hosts scored five runs in the sixth.
Amanda Stromquist suffered the loss despite having a stellar starting pitching effort. Grinnell managed just one hit, an infield single by
Aniela Wendt '14 in the sixth inning.
In the second game, Coe erupted for eight runs in the first inning, nine in the second and four in the third for a 21-0 lead.
Grinnell got both its runs in the fourth. Wendt reached base on a dropped third strike and took second when
Summer Wilke '15 walked.
Christina Colver '13 plated both runs with a double to left-center.
Grinnell's other hit came in the fifth, a single by
Aiyana Turpen-Scott '14.
The Pioneers open Midwest Conference play Saturday when Illinois College visits Grinnell. The first of two games begins at 1 p.m.
