Box Score LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Grinnell College softball team nearly knocked off Lake Forest College in the opening game of a twin bill Sunday afternoon, falling 7-6 in nine innings after leading 6-1 at one point.
The hosts finished off the sweep with a 9-1 win in the nightcap. Lake Forest is now 4-0 in the Midwest Conference and 14-13 overall, while Grinnell fell to 0-4 in the league and 2-21 in all games.
In the opener,
Amanda Stromquist '13 had three of Grinnell's nine hits including two doubles.
Summer Wilke '15 had two hits.
The Pioneers erupted for four runs on three hits in the first inning and were aided by two errors.
Aiyana Turpen-Scott '14 had an RBI single through the left side and
Jennifer Fulton '15 added an RBI groundout. Other hits in the frame were singles by Wilke and Stromquist.
Lake Forest scored once in the bottom of the second, but the Pioneers tacked on solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth,
Jessica Menary '13 singled with one out, went to second on single by
Grace Ryan '14 and scored when Wilke sent an RBI single to right-center.
In the fifth,
Jayme Wiebold '12 singled up the middle, went to third on Stromquist's double to right and scored on an error.
However, the hosts tallied three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to force extra innings. A walk-off homer in the ninth ended the game. Fulton suffered the pitching loss.
Lake Forest put together eight runs in the bottom of the first inning of the second game. Grinnell's lone run came in the fourth when Wiebold crossed the plate on an error. Lake Forest scored in the bottom of the inning and held the Pioneers scoreless in the fifth to end the game.
Grinnell managed three hits in the game, including a double by
Aniela Wendt '14.
The Pioneers are slated to play at Monmouth College next Saturday.
