Pioneers lose tight contest in battle of regionally-ranked teams

GRINNELL – Grinnell College's women's tennis team lost a hard-fought 5-4 decision to Luther College in a battle of regionally-ranked squads Sunday afternoon at 10th Avenue Courts.

Grinnell got singles wins from Laura Krull '13 at No. 3 (6-2, 6-0) and Hanna Feldman '14 at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3). Doubles winners were the Nos. 2 and 3 teams of Toby Cain '12-Emma Macdonald '14 and Shirlene Luk '15-Clothilde Thirouin '14 (9-8).

Grinnell, ranked 13th in the Central Region of NCAA Division III, is 18-3 while No. 15 Luther moved to 17-11.

“Signs that we are progressing is that we were able to win two doubles points today,” said Grinnell coach Andy Hamilton. “All three of our doubles teams played well, and what I was really pleased with is that we were playing comfortably on the court.

Laura Krull continues to have a good spring of singles play,” he continued. “The key for us is keeping her healthy. Hanna Feldman, throughout her career, has proven to be too much for her opponents. Today she figured out a nice game plan to gain a victory.”

The Pioneers conclude their regular season Wednesday at Cornell College.
