Pioneers fall to Knox on rainy Senior Day

Box Score GRINNELL – The Grinnell College softball team lost a 10-7 contest to Knox College on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Softball Complex.

The second game was postponed due to the ongoing showers, with no make-up date announced.

Amanda Stromquist '12 celebrated Senior Day in a big way for Grinnell, going 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs. Summer Wilke '15 added two hits, including a triple.

Knox scored twice in the top of the first inning, but the Pioneers bounced back with two runs in the bottom of the frame. Wilke had a lead-off triple to right field and scored on Stromquist's infield single. Jessica Menary '13 later hit into a fielder's choice to score Christina Colver '13.

Knox made it 5-2 in the top of the third before Grinnell scored once in the bottom of the third and fourth to close within 5-4. A wild pitch allowed Jayme Wiebold '12 to score in the third inning, while Stromquist rapped an RBI single to right in the fourth.

The Pioneers took the lead temporarily with a two-run output in the fifth. Cristal Coleman '15 scored on a passed ball and Aniela Wendt '14 scored on an error. However, the visitors tallied two runs in the sixth and three in the seventh to pull ahead 10-6.

The Pioneers got one run back in the bottom of the seventh when Aiyana Turpen-Scott '14 had an RBI groundout.

Jennifer Fulton '15 suffered the pitching loss for Grinnell, 2-26 overall and 0-7 in the Midwest Conference. Knox improved to 9-17 in all games and 1-6 in the league.
