Pioneers' season ends with NCAA Regional loss

CHICAGO – The Grinnell College women's tennis team saw its 2011-12 campaign draw to a close Friday with a 5-0 loss to Carleton College at the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament hosted by the University of Chicago.

The No. 18 regionally-ranked Pioneers finished with a 19-4 mark, the second-most wins in school history and just one shy of the program record of 20. Carleton, ranked fifth in the region and 30th nationally, moves on with a 19-5 record.

Grinnell's doubles teams of Sadhana Athreya '14-Laura Krull '13, Toby Cain '12-Emma Macdonald '14 and Shirlene Luk '15-Clothilde Thirouin '14 suffered setbacks to begin the day. Luk and Thirouin lost by a close 9-7 margin.

Cain and Hanna Feldman '14 then lost at Nos. 4 and 6 singles to end the contest.
