Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa - A huge second half sent Grinnell College to a 128-86 victory over Beloit College in a battle of Midwest Conference men's basketball co-leaders Wednesday night at Darby Gymnasium.
Grinnell, 5-1 in the league and 8-2 overall, led 57-50 before outscoring the visitors 71-36 in the final 20 minutes.
Jack Taylor '15 led all scorers with 29 points with the aid of 5-of-12 shooting from 3-point land, while
Jesse Ney '13 drained 6-of-9 treys to finish with 18 points.
Luke Yeager '15 added 17 points and four steals,
Patrick Maher '14 scored 13 points and
Griffin Lentsch '13 poured in 10.
Marques Valdez '13 contributed seven rebounds and three steals,
Joe Rogers '13 dished out five assists and
Jack Adams '13 blocked a pair of shots.
Tyler Butke had 19 points for the Buccaneers, who fell to 4-2 in the MWC and 5-5 in all contests.
The first half was tight throughout before Grinnell used an 8-1 run to close things out. Taylor began the run with a layup and 3-pointer to break a tie and make it 54-49. After Beloit got a free throw,
Aaron Levin '14 sank a 3-pointer to put the Pioneers ahead by seven at the break.
The Pioneers picked up where they left off to start the second half, as Levin hit a jumper, Yeager drained a 3-pointer and Adams made a layup to make it 64-50 with 18:10 remaining.
It was all Grinnell after that, as the Pioneers never let Beloit within single digits again and continued to build their lead before winning by 42. The final margin was their biggest cushion of the game.
Grinnell travels to Waukesha, Wis., for a game Saturday against Carroll University. Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m.
