Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – Sparked by a hot shooting attack, the Grinnell College men's basketball team cruised past Lake Forest College 100-62 Saturday afternoon at Darby Gymnasium.
The Pioneers shot a sizzling 46.9 percent from 3-point land (23-of-49), the fifth-best accuracy rate in school history, and used a balanced scoring effort to move to 10-3 in the Midwest Conference and 13-4 in all games. They remain just a game off the league lead.
Griffin Lentsch '13 led the Pioneers' scoring attack with 14 points, while
Jesse Ney '13 added 12,
Aaron Levin '14 scored 11 and
Garrett Nitz '13 poured in 10 to go along with eight assists. Lentsch and Ney were both 4-of-7 from the 3-point line.
Patrick Maher '14 also had eight assists as well as five steals.
Brian McManamy '13 led the team in rebounds with six while also blocking two shots.
Jeff Beck scored 13 points for the Foresters, who fell to 3-10 in the MWC and 5-13 in all games.
It was tight early, with Grinnell clinging to a 17-15 lead with 12:37 left in the first half. But the Pioneers broke things open with a 10-0 run over the next few minutes.
Luke Yeager '15 began the spurt with a layup,
Joe Rogers '13 followed with a layup and Lentsch and Levin cashed in on 3-pointers to make it 27-15 at the 10:00 mark.
Grinnell continued to pull away, going ahead by 18 points at 41-23 on a free throw by Rogers before heading into the locker room with a 41-25 edge.
Any Forester comeback hopes were dashed immediately in the second half, as Grinnell opened it with a 16-3 run. Nitz made a 3-pointer and layup and
Jack Adams '13 scored inside for a 48-25 lead.
After Lake Forest got a layup and free throw, McManamy,
Tague Zachary '15 and
Dominique Bellamy '13 hit 3-pointers to put the Pioneers on top 57-28 with 14:32 left.
Grinnell worked its lead as large as 41 points before winning by 38.
The Pioneers are back home Tuesday when Knox College visits Darby Gymnasium. Game time is 5 p.m.
