Fast start sends Pioneers to easy win over Knox

Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – It took virtually no time at all for the Grinnell College men's basketball team to take command and race away from Knox College for a 136-65 victory Tuesday at Darby Gymnasium.

The Pioneers scored 20 of the first 24 points as they coasted to a 72-25 halftime lead. They continued to cruise from there to move to 11-3 in the Midwest Conference and 14-4 overall.

Jesse Ney '13 had the hot hand for the Pioneers, hitting 8-of-13 shots from 3-point land on his way to scoring a game-high 28 points. As a team, Grinnell was 31-of-72 from beyond the arc for 43.1 percent and also forced 40 turnovers.

Brian McManamy '13 was a force on the defensive end, blocking eight shots, the third-highest total in school history.

Griffin Lentsch '13 added 20 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the 3-point stripe, Patrick Maher '14 added 13 points and eight assists, Aaron Levin '14 came up with 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting from 3-point land and Luke Yeager '15 added 11 points.

Garrett Nitz '13 had another strong passing performance, distributing 10 assists, while Marques Valdez '13 pulled down eight rebounds and Dominique Bellamy '13 added four steals.

Knox, 1-12 in the MWC and 1-17 in all games, got 13 points from David Jones.

Ney fittingly opened the game's scoring with a 3-pointer, and Maher added consecutive buckets to put the Pioneers on top 7-0.

After a basket by Knox, Lentsch and McManamy hit 3-pointers and Ney sank a free throw for a 14-2 Pioneer lead. Knox added another basket before Ney and Evan Johnson '15 connected on long-range baskets to make it 20-4 with 11:18 to go in the half.

Grinnell continued to roll, leading by 47 at halftime before increasing that lead to as many as 73 in the second half.

The Pioneers hit the road from here, playing a 3 p.m. contest at Beloit College on Saturday.
