Pioneer women's tennis team secures spot in MWC Tournament

GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College women's tennis team secured a spot in the four-team Midwest Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon by blanking Knox College 9-0.

Earlier in the day, the Pioneers lost a hard-fought 5-4 decision to unbeaten Lake Forest College.

In the Knox win, Shirlene Luk '15, Sadhana Athreya '14, Virginia Purcell '17, Hanna Feldman '14, Emma Macdonald '14 and Julia Rumley '16 all swept their opponents. Luk won 6-3, 6-3, Athreya was victorious 6-3, 6-0 and the other four did not surrender a game.

The teams of Luk-Athreya and Feldman-Macdonald each won by 8-1 scores at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, while Rumley and Purcell won 8-2 at the third spot.

Grinnell fell behind 3-0 after doubles against Lake Forest before racing back to take four singles matches. Singles winners were Luk at No. 1 (6-3, 7-6), Athreya at No. 2 (6-3, 6-2), Macdonald at No. 5 (6-3, 6-2) and Rumley at No. 6 (6-3, 6-3).

The Pioneers are now 4-1 in the MWC South Division and 9-4 overall. Their most likely foe in the postseason tourney will be North Division champion St. Norbert College.
