Grinnell stays in title hunt as coach Arseneault gains 300th career victory

Coach David Arseneault poses with the Grinnell Pioneers after they presented him a plaque for winning his 300th career game on Tuesday.
Box Score GRINNELL, Iowa – For the Grinnell College men's basketball team, Tuesday night's victory over Cornell College was twice as nice.

Not only did the 99-90 win keep the Pioneers in a first-place tie in the Midwest Conference standings, it also marked coach David Arseneault reaching the 300-win milestone for his career.

Arseneault, already the winningest coach in program history, became just the fifth men's basketball coach in the MWC to join the 300-win club.

Additionally, Tuesday's victory was Arseneault's 200th in league play. The Pioneers improved to 17-4 overall and 14-3 in the MWC with the win, pushing Arseneault's career marks to 300-234 overall and 200-155 in the conference.

A victory at Lawrence University on Saturday would assure the Pioneers at least a share of the MWC title and hosting rights for the following weekend's league tournament.

In the Cornell win, Luke Yeager '15 scored a game-high 19 points on 4-of-10 shooting from 3-point land. Griffin Lentsch '13 added 18 points and Jesse Ney '13 tallied 15.

Patrick Maher '14 dished out seven assists and had three steals, Garrett Nitz '13 added four assists and Joe Rogers '13 pulled down seven rebounds.

Tabari Carter had 19 points for the Rams, who fell to 7-10 in the MWC and 8-14 in all games.

Grinnell broke away from a close game early and opened up a 16-point lead in the first half when a jumper by Lentsch made it 32-16 with 9:55 to go. However, Cornell scrapped its way back within two points before Lentsch made a layup, Ney hit a 3-pointer and Marques Valdez '13 made a layup to put the Pioneers ahead 48-39 at halftime.

But again the Rams rallied, and even took the lead, as the game remained tight much of the second half. It was a three-point game when Lentsch and Ney hit consecutive 3-pointers and Yeager sank two free throws to stretch the lead to 81-70 with 6:31 remaining.

Later, leading 81-73, the Pioneers put the game away with a nine-point run. Nitz started things with a pair of free throws, and then Yeager made two free throws. Jack Adams '13 followed with a layup, Bellamy added another and Yeager sank a free throw to make it 90-73 with 3:30 to go.

The lead was never in single digits again until the end.

Grinnell's game at Lawrence, the regular-season finale, is slated for 3 p.m. Saturday.
