Grinnell women's basketball team closes out season on strong note

Box Score APPLETON, Wis. – Grinnell College's basketball team finished off its 2012-13 campaign on a strong note Saturday afternoon, defeating Lawrence University 79-68 in Midwest Conference play.

Alissa Hirsh '16 scored a game-high 21 points for the Pioneers, who finished at 9-9 in league play and 11-12 overall while snapping a three-game league losing streak.

Tolu Alabi '13 finished her career with 16 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Michelle Briggs '13 wrapped up her time in a Pioneer uniform with another double-double. She had 11 points and 10 boards.

Hirsh also dished out five assists for Grinnell, while Abby Jaeger '14 and Kelly Clarke '13 both tallied nine points. Clarke had a trio of 3-pointers.

Amber Lisowe had 19 points for the Vikings, who finished at 1-17 in the MWC and 2-21 in all games.

The teams were tied at 5-all early before the Pioneers got some breathing room as Anne Boldt '16 hit a 3-pointer, Alabi scored on a jumper and Karen Gogins '13 drained a 3-pointer for a 13-5 edge.

Lawrence got within 13-8 before the Pioneers opened things up with a 12-2 run. Hirsh opened that spurt with a layup and Alabi made a basket and free throw. After Lawrence scored, Clarke sank a shot from beyond the arc and Alabi added a layup and two free throws to make it 25-10 with 3:18 to go in the half.

Grinnell was up 28-15 at intermission and built its lead as large as 23 in the second half. Lawrence never got closer than nine down the stretch.
