Pioneers set for 2013 MWC Men's Basketball Tournament

DE PERE, Wis. – For the third consecutive season, the Grinnell College men's basketball squad will be part of a four-team field making up the Midwest Conference Tournament.

The Pioneers are the second seed in the field, owning a 14-4 league mark and 17-5 overall record. They will play third-seeded Carroll University, 13-5 in the MWC and 17-6 in all games, at 5 p.m. Friday at the Schuldes Sports Center in De Pere, Wis.

Top-seed and host St. Norbert College, 15-3 in the MWC and 18-5 in all games, will meet fourth-seeded Ripon College at 7 p.m. The Red Hawks are 11-7 in the MWC and 13-10 in all games.

The winners meet at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the victor earning the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Division III National Tournament.

Grinnell and Carroll played just once this season, with Carroll pulling out a 119-110 victory Jan. 5 at Waukesha, Wis. Jack Taylor '15 had 48 points for Grinnell in that contest before suffering a season-ending injury in the Pioneers' next outing.

Patrick Maher '14 and Luke Yeager '15 each had 12 points in the game. Carroll was paced by Jake Bast and Alec Molter, who scored 27 and 25 points, respectively.

Grinnell ranks first in the nation in five categories – scoring offense (113.4 points per game), 3-pointers per game (18.2), assists per game (20.0), steals per game (15.5) and turnover margin (plus 14.2). The Pioneers are also fourth in scoring margin at plus 17.0 points.

Griffin Lentsch '13 leads the Pioneers in scoring with 19.0 points per game, while others in double digits are Yeager (13.3), Maher (11.6) and Aaron Levin '14 (10.0).

Maher is 11th in the nation in assist-turnover ratio (2.75) and 15th in assists per game (5.8). He also leads Grinnell in steals per game with 2.3.

Carroll is fifth in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage at 41.8 percent and 14th in field goal percentage at 49.3.

Molter leads the team's balanced scoring attack with 11.8 points per game, while Kevin Hurd averages 10.4 and Bast 10.0.

Molter averages 7.7 boards per game and Rudy Bentley averages 3.5 assists a contest.
