Grinnell sees early leads disappear in softball setbacks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Grinnell College softball team held early leads in two of three recent games, but ended up going 0-3 during that span.

Grinnell led Rutgers-Newark 4-3 before falling 14-4 on Tuesday, and was on top of Lasell 3-0 before losing 7-3 on Wednesday. Also Wednesday, the Pioneers fell 4-0 to Rio Grande.

In the game with Rutgers-Newark, Grinnell got a three-run homer from Kristina Weber '16 and three hits from Grace Ryan '14. Robin Campbell '16 added a double, while Summer Wilke '15 and Lindsay Fujimoto '15 each had singles.

The winners scored three runs in the top of the second inning, but the Pioneers rolled back into contention with one run in the bottom of the inning and three more in the third. In the second, Fujimoto singled to right, took second on a groundout, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on Campbell's double to left.

In the third, Ryan singled to right with one out, moved to second when Wilke singled to left and both scored when Weber sent a homer over the left-field fence.

However, Rutgers-Newark tallied three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and seven more in the seventh to win by 10.

Jennifer Fulton '15, the second Grinnell pitcher, suffered the loss.

Grinnell managed seven hits against Lasell, including two by Aniela Wendt '14 and a double by Fujimoto. Ryan, Wilke, Weber and Jordan Matosky '16 all had singles.

Wilke suffered the pitching loss despite giving up just one earned run and fanning four in five innings of work.

The Pioneers scored all three of their runs in the top of the first. Wendt led off with a single to center and moved to second on an infield single by Ryan. Each runner moved up on stolen bases before Weber delivered an RBI single to left.

Ryan followed with another run and Weber crossed the plate on a passed ball. Lasell tallied two runs in the second inning and finished the scoring with five in the sixth.

Rio Grande pitcher Kimberly Hazlett held Grinnell to two hits and struck out nine while leading her team to victory. Hits were by Fulton and Campbell.

Fulton gave up six hits for Grinnell and allowed just two earned runs while striking out four.

The Pioneers dipped to 0-7 with the losses.
