Grinnell plays even with Lasell, but loses 2-run decision

Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Grinnell College's softball team played even with Lasell College in the hit column, but Lasell ended up eking out an 8-6 victory Friday morning.

Grinnell pounded out 10 hits in the contest, including two by Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and Jennifer Fulton '15. Fulton was 2-for-2 with a double.

Jordan Matosky '16 also doubled, while Summer Wilke '15, Alyssa Bean '16, Grace Ryan '14, Jeanette Au '16 and Robin Campbell '16 all singled.

Lasell got out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Pioneers responded with two runs in the second. With one out, Au singled to center and moved to third on Fulton's double to left. Campbell then hit into a fielder's choice to score one run, while Matosky added an RBI a bit later with another fielder's choice.

The winners came back with three runs in the bottom of the second inning for a 6-2 lead. Grinnell scratched out a run in the third when Wilke singled to center with one out, took second on a passed ball, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Ryan's infield single.

Lasell scored twice in the fifth for an 8-6 edge. The Pioneers finished off the scoring with three runs in the sixth. Fulton led off with a walk, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on Matosky's double to right. Fujimoto later singled to left to score Matosky.

Bean suffered the pitching loss for the Pioneers, who are now 0-10.

Grinnell is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Wartburg College Wednesday. Game time is 4 p.m.
