Pioneers fall twice on Thursday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Grinnell College softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday, falling 12-0 to Frostburg State and 14-3 to Rio Grande.

Frostburg State pitcher Shari Beavers tossed a one-hitter, that being a one-out double by Jeanette Au '16 in the fifth inning. It was a scoreless game until Frostburg State scored four runs in the fourth inning and eight in the fifth.

Summer Wilke '15 suffered the pitching loss.

Grinnell jumped on top of Rio Grande with two runs in the first inning, but the winners came back with five runs in the bottom of the frame and eight more in the third. Rio Grande scored once in the fourth and the Pioneers had a run in the fifth.

Grinnell managed three hits, including a double and single by Aniela Wendt '14. Alyssa Bean '16 added a single and was also tagged with the pitching setback.

In the first inning, Wendt led off with a single to shortstop, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and scored on an error. Wilke and Kristina Weber '16 each walked before Bean singled, a play on which Weber would be ruled out. Au was then hit by a pitch before Grace Ryan '14 was walked to force in a run.

In the fifth, Jordan Matosky '16 was hit by a pitch and scored on Wendt's double to center field.

Grinnell, 0-9, concludes its spring break trip with a pair of games Friday.
