Pioneers' rally falls short in loss to Ripon

Box Score EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The Grinnell College softball team attempted to rally in the final inning, but came up short in a 4-1 setback to Ripon College Sunday at the Midwest Conference Crossover.

Ripon scored two runs in the second inning and one each in the third and sixth innings for a 4-0 lead.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Grace Ryan '14 walked and was replaced by pinch runner Connie Lee '15. Jennifer Fulton '15 then singled through the left side to send Lee to second, and a groundout pushed the runners up another base.

Robin Campbell '16 then singled up the middle to plate Lee and send Fulton to third. Campbell stole second and Jordan Matosky '16 walked to load the bases before a strikeout ended the game.

Grinnell managed two other hits in the games, singles by Aniela Wendt '14 and Jeanette Au '16.

Summer Wilke '15 was the pitcher of record for Grinnell. She gave up just two earned runs and struck out three.

Later in the day, Beloit College defeated the Pioneers 8-0 as the Buccaneer pitcher fired a no-hitter. Fulton suffered the pitching loss.

Grinnell, 0-5 in the MWC and 0-19 in all games, hosts Cornell College Wednesday at the Softball Complex. The first game of the doubleheader is slated for 3 p.m.
