Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – Grinnell College's softball team dropped a pair of games to Midwest Conference South Division foe Cornell College Tuesday, losing 11-2 and 13-2 at the Softball Complex.
Cornell opened the scoring in the first game with two runs in the top of the second inning, but the Pioneers responded with one in the bottom of the frame as
Alyssa Bean '16 singled up the middle, went to second when
Grace Ryan '14 got hit by a pitch, took third on
Robin Campbell's '16 walk and came across the plate on
Jordan Matosky's '16 single up the middle.
The Rams then tallied two runs in the third, four in the fourth and three in the fifth for an 11-1 lead. The Pioneers managed one run in the bottom of the inning when Campbell was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored when
Aniela Wendt '14 hit into a fielder's choice.
Bean suffered the pitching loss.
In the second game, the Rams pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of nine Grinnell errors. They got out to a 12-0 lead with three runs in the first inning, seven in the second and two more in the third.
The Pioneers scored both their runs in the bottom of the third.
Summer Wilke '15 doubled to right-center and
Jennifer Fulton '15 walked before Bean blasted a double to left field to score both runners.
Cornell finished off the scoring with a run in the fifth. Fulton was tagged with the pitching loss.
Cornell is now 6-5 in the MWC and 13-9 overall, while Grinnell fell to 0-7 in league play and 0-21 in all contests.
Grinnell plays Saturday at Illinois College. The MWC doubleheader starts at 11 a.m.
