Illinois College takes pair from Pioneer softball team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Grinnell College softball team dropped decisions of 11-1 and 7-1 to Illinois College in Midwest Conference action Saturday afternoon.

Alyssa Bean '16 led Grinnell in the opener with a pair of singles, while Summer Wilke '15 also singled. Illinois College scored two runs in the first inning, four in the second and three in the third for a 9-0 edge.

Grinnell got its run in the fourth. With one out, Wilke singled and was sacrificed to second by Jennifer Fulton '15. Bean followed with a single to send Wilke to third, and the latter then crossed the plate on an error.

The Lady Blues finished off the scoring with two runs in the fourth.

Wilke was the pitcher of record for Grinnell and struck out two batters.

In the second game, the Pioneers managed just one hit, a triple by Fulton. The winners shot out to a 6-0 cushion with three runs in the first and third innings.

The Pioneers closed within 6-1 in the fifth as Robin Campbell '16 walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Aniela Wendt '14 reached on an error. The Lady Blues countered with one run in the bottom of the fifth.

Fulton suffered the pitching loss and struck out one.

Illinois College moved to 8-3 in the league and 17-11 in all games, while the Pioneers fell to 0-9 in MWC play and 0-23 overall.

Grinnell has another MWC twin bill Sunday, facing Knox College in Galesburg, Ill., at 1 p.m.
