Pioneer softball team nearly knocks off division-leading Lake Forest

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team battled Midwest Conference South Division leader Lake Forest College toe-to-toe for six innings before falling 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Softball Complex.

Grinnell led 2-1 through four innings and was tied at 2-all with the Foresters through six before the visitors tallied three runs in the seventh to secure the victory.

Alyssa Bean '16 starred both hitting and pitching for the Pioneers. She belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence in the first inning to put the Pioneers ahead and also tossed a five-hitter while striking out one.

Lake Forest scored one run in the top of the first before the Pioneers' big inning. Alissa Hirsh '16, seeing her collegiate softball debut on Saturday, got her first collegiate hit when she led off with a single to right. Aniela Wendt '14 then reached on a fielder's choice before Bean blasted the first homer of her college career and the Pioneers' second overall of the season.

Lake Forest tied the game in the fifth with a run and then pulled away in the seventh. Other than the first-inning hits, Grinnell also had a single to left from Wendt in the sixth frame.

In the opener, Lake Forest tallied six runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third for a 10-0 cushion. The Foresters, who had 15 hits in the game and took advantage of six Pioneer errors, then tacked on seven runs in the fourth and one in the fifth.

Grinnell had five hits, including a pair of singles by Bean and one-baggers by Jennifer Fulton '15, Jeanette Au '16 and Jordan Matosky '16.

Fulton suffered the pitching loss for Grinnell.

Lake Forest is now 12-3 in the MWC and 17-14 overall, while the Pioneers dipped to 0-13 in league play and 0-27 in all games.

Grinnell entertains Monmouth College Sunday for a Senior Day doubleheader. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
