GRINNELL, Iowa – The Grinnell College softball team saved its best for last.
The Pioneers collected their first win of the season, and snapped a 36-game Midwest Conference losing streak dating back to 2010, with a 2-1 come-from-behind thriller victory over Monmouth College Sunday afternoon during Senior Day at the Softball Complex.
The win also marked Grinnell's first win over the Fighting Scots since 2006.
Monmouth scored a run in the top of the first inning and pitcher Alyssa Edler was throwing no-hit ball through five innings.
Grinnell picked up steam in the sixth when
Lindsay Fujimoto '15 and
Alyssa Bean '16 each singled, but the base runners were stranded as the game crept into the seventh inning.
Jennifer Fulton '15, who tossed a four-hitter, struck out seven and didn't issue an earned run or walk, sat the Fighting Scots down in order in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the frame,
Jordan Matosky '16 blooped a one-out infield single and
Robin Campbell '16 delivered a single through the left side. After Matosky stole third, Campbell went to second on a groundout.
Fujimoto then reached base on a fielder's choice as the other runners stayed put, loading the bases.
Alissa Hirsh '16 then grounded to the shortstop, whose error allowed Matosky to score and tie the game.
Aniela Wendt '14 then stepped to the plate, and promptly bashed an RBI single up the middle to give Grinnell the win and send the Pioneers and their fans into celebration.
In the second game, Monmouth pitcher Taylor Smith tossed a two-hitter to earn the win.
The Fighting Scots got solo runs in the second and fourth innings for a 2-0 lead. Grinnell attempted to come back in the seventh inning as Bean led off with a walk, stole second and went to third on Fulton's sacrifice.
After a strikeout, Matosky hit an infield single to push a run across the plate. Campbell then walked and each runner stole a base to put the tying run 60 feet from home plate. However, a groundout ended the game.
Besides Matosky, Fulton also had a single in the game.
Fulton was the pitcher of record, scattering five hits and striking out two in five innings. Bean worked the final two innings and tossed two-hit ball without giving up a run.
Grinnell was slated to host Greenville College on Tuesday, but those games have been cancelled.
